Se folosește gerunziul, nu infinitivul:

  • după prepoziții:

without

INCORECT: Do your work without to speak.

CORECT: Do your work without speaking.

instead of

INCORECT: He went away, instead to wait.

CORECT: He went away, instead of waiting.

  • după cuvinte care, de obicei, se folosesc cu o prepoziție:

capable of

INCORECT: They are quite capable to do that.

CORECT: They are quite capable of doing that.

think of

INCORECT: I often think to go to England.

CORECT: I often think of going to England.

tired of

INCORECT: The customer got tired to wait.

CORECT: The customer got tired of waiting.

insist on

INCORECT: Tom insisted to go to London.

CORECT: Tom insisted on going to London.

used to

INCORECT: She’s used to get up early.

CORECT: She’s used to getting up early.

  • după anumite verbe:

enjoy

INCORECT: I enjoy to play football.

CORECT: I enjoy playing football.

excuse

INCORECT: Please excuse me to be so late.

CORECT: Please excuse me for being so late.

CORECT: Please excuse my being so late.

mind

INCORECT: Would you mind to open the door?

CORECT: Would you mind opening the door?

avoid

INCORECT: You can’t avoid to make mistakes.

CORECT: You can’t avoid making mistakes.

finish

INCORECT: Have you finished to speak?

CORECT: Have you finished speaking?

remember

INCORECT: I don’t remember to have seen him.

CORECT: I don’t remember seeing him.

CORECT: I don’t remember having seen him.

stop

INCORECT: The wind has stopped to blow.

CORECT: The wind has stopped blowing.

  • după anumite adjective:

busy

INCORECT: He was busy to revise the exams.

CORECT: He was busy revising for the exams.

worth

INCORECT: Is today’s film worth to see?

CORECT: Is today’s film worth seeing?

  • după anumite expresii:

look forward to

INCORECT: I look forward to see him soon.

CORECT: I look forward to seeing him soon.

there is no harm in

INCORECT: There is no harm to visit her now.

CORECT: There is no harm in visiting her now.

it’s no good

INCORECT: It’s no good to get angry.ro

CORECT: It’s no good getting angry.

have the pleasure of

INCORECT: I had the pleasure to meet him.

CORECT: I had the pleasure of meeting him.

take pleasure in

INCORECT: He takes great pleasure to help others.
